Training an Airedale
Terrier

The Airedale Terrier
By Drew Sire
The Airedale Terrier is the King of the Terriers. The
Airedale holds this title for several reasons…the first being
its size. The Airedale can grow as large as 70 pounds, larger
than any other terrier breed. Another reason is the country it
originates from …England. The most well known monarchy in the
world should have a dog all its own – and the Airedale is proud
to hold that title.
Temperament
From the time the Airedale is a puppy, its intelligence is
very apparent. Its ability to learn and the speed at which it
takes to obedience training is almost unequaled. This king of
the breed takes to being a guard dog, a watchdog and a playmate
with equal abandon. Herding is also a favorite pastime for this
odd-looking creature.
Appearance of the Airedale
Like most terriers, the Airedale has a coarse coat on top of
a softer undercoat. Shedding is not an issue with this breed
though some skin conditions can arise in some lines. Even
though shedding is not a major issue, regular clipping is
required as the Airedale's wiry coat can get easily
tangled.
If you are considering an Airedale
Terrier
If you have decided that an Airedale Terrier is on your
short list of possible breeds to buy, you should consider a few
things first:
If you are an active person and don't mind taking your new
buddy out on the road with you for a daily jog, then an
Airedale may be a good choice. This majestic breed was not
meant to lie around the house.

Are you a fan of Tigger (you know, Winnie's buddy)? You need
to be if you are considering an Airedale. They can be rather
bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, fun, fun, fun, fun until they
are about two years old. As a result, things can go flying
around your house like your lamp, your car keys, your glasses,
your kid…get the picture?
If you do not want to deal with an independent streak, the
Airedale may not be for you. They are a proud breed and will
make you prove repeatedly that you are the boss. Even when you
show them who the Alpha dog is, they can still be aggressive
toward other dogs. Proper socialization will help alleviate
this tendency, but you should never be in public with your
Airedale without a leash. He is very protective of you and has
no problem letting the world know that you are his human.
So beware…when you take your Airedale puppy home on that
first day, if you are not careful, he will quickly take over
the household. The Airedale is a proud breed and any training
should be centered on that notion. They respond better to
positive feedback than negative training techniques. They tend
to take the word "no" as a challenge instead of an instruction.
But when he does realize who is boss, you could not have a more
loyal friend.
